Preparation:
Prepare a room with enough free space to run around. Mark a line with tape or place a long bench in an accessible place for the children to line up along.
How to play:
The marked line or bench is the chicken coop, or the place where the chickens gather. The children’s goal is to line up in a line. Designate one child as the fox. The other children are the chickens, who will initially stand on the line or perch.
To start the game, say that it is time for the chickens to go outside to peck at the grain. The children who are the chickens should then start running around the room.
The child playing the fox must try to catch the chickens before they get back to the perch. The goal of the chickens is to quickly run to the perch, where they are safe from the fox. At the end of the game, line up the children again. If desired, choose a new fox and repeat the game.
Additionally:
In addition to providing an opportunity for movement, this activity develops the child's ability to be considerate of peers and to move safely in space.
